Weddings are a hectic time for all involved. Who is expected to do what? And most importantly what are you expected to wear? Firstly, most books on wedding etiquette will tell you that the mother of the bride takes some priority here as far as choosing what look and style the ‘mothers’ will grace on the special day. Traditionally, the bride’s mother will choose her dress first, to be followed by the mother of the groom. If this is the bride’s wish, then its best to follow suit and try your best to accommodate her wishes.
Whether the bride and groom wish to follow these traditions of etiquette or not, as the mother of the groom it’s still best for you to know what the bride’s mother will be wearing. This way the two of you can coordinate well and not have clashing styles or colors on opposite ends of the spectrum. For example, you wouldn’t want to show up in a pantsuit if the bride’s mother is wearing a full ball gown!
Coordinating with the mother of the bride and bridesmaids does not mean you should wear the same color dresses! Usually the wedding theme consists of several colors. Usually the main color is of course worn by the bridesmaids, but accent colors appear in flowers, and other decorative accessories. The mother of the groom could choose one of the accent colors to base her outfit on, this way blending well in group photos so as not to clash with others in the wedding party. A note of caution though, avoid wearing white, off white, ivory or anything that looks similar to what the bride will be wearing.
